The consultancy role
was carried out on behalf of Hanston Technology Partners Ltd
for Network Rail.
Our engineer's objective was to investigate and propose solutions to the
delays and poor data quality that Hanston's client was experiencing from
their supplier. We worked closely with the supplier's DBA to understand
the complex delivery mechanism used to transfer data to Network Rail. Our
work involved the investigation of a 4.6Tb Oracle 9i application, which
resided on Windows 2000 platform and using HP SAN technology.
The investigation was carried out on the database performance, the workflow
of the data processing and the data migration process. Transportable tablespaces
was the main mechanism for moving data. There being some 13000 tablespaces
was not only a challenge to the application but Oracle themselves have
not experienced such extensive use of this mechanism. Problem hotspots
were identified and reports with proposed solutions were delivered to our
client.
